TGHI Fellowship 2024 Edition
The TGHI Fall 2024 Fellowship was an immersive twelve-week educational program (September - December) that brought together a cohort undergraduate students from humanities to STEM interested in global healthcare technology. Fellowship meetings took place 7:30 - 9:30pm on Mondays, with guest speakers and tech workshops to complement their weekly learning.

Fellows learned about cost-benefit analysis, healthcare financing structures, and health economic modeling. We also held a tech workshop on how to analyze healthcare economic data in Python.

We were delighted to have Dr. Matthew Basilico and Dr. Marcella Alsan speak on the economics of health inequality, particularly in prison healthcare. Pre-talk readings were on specific economic models (decision trees, Markov models, Monte Carlo) for cost-effectiveness analysis.

We explored tech solutions for mental health, including virtual reality to combat loneliness among the elderly. The fellowship session included an ideathon to develop innovative tech solutions for elder care or mental health challenges. AugMend Health also came in to demonstrate their tech and collaboration with clinics using VR.

We covered the basics of artificial intelligence and machine learning, model training, and their implications for global health.

Team-based workshop to develop a strategy / detailed concept outline for an AI tool to address tuberculosis in a fictional country, with the setting inspired by real-world healthcare systems.

We were excited to host Prof. Leo Celi of MIT, who discussed his extensive work on combatting bias in AI for healthcare in his talk “From AI Bias to AI By Us, for All of Us.”

We discussed disaster preparedness, response strategies, and ethical dilemmas in crisis management. TGHI’s own Project MADE team came in to talk about their work building a resource allocation calculator for crisis zones in collaboration with Health Tech Without Borders.

We had an awesome discussion with Prof. Ben Reis of Harvard Medical School, a global leader in predictive medicine (and PI of the Predictive Medicine Group at Harvard), who introduced students to the world of predictive models for mental health, epidemiology, and their various other applications in healthcare.

Fellows participated in a mini-hackathon centered around predicting non-communicable diseases!

Fellows were given an overview of biotechnology's role in infectious disease diagnostics and global health, with an activity to explore global infectious disease data using interactive maps.

Fellows participated in a biotechnology hackathon, with a discussion of ethical considerations in biotech.

Fellows gave final presentations on their team projects they worked on throughout the semester!
Fellowship FAQ

Weeks 0 to 4: ~1.5 hours a week of Fellowship meetings.
Weeks 4 to 8: Participants will spend an additional 1 to 2 hours outside of Fellowship meetings to work on their projects.

To create an engaging experience, we aim to accept around 15 participants.

You will fill out a short application by September 17th @ 11:59 PM. We will notify you of the application status by September 22nd.

Nope! We welcome students from all backgrounds. A demonstrated interest is all you need.

In some weeks, Co-Directors of Education will lead fellowship meetings. In other weeks, we will invite professors, executives of global health organizations, and healthcare professionals to lead case studies and speak at our fellowship meetings. Our Co-Directors of Technology will lead technical workshops.

Our Fellowship is the only educational student-run initiative for undergraduates to learn about the intersection of global health and technology. You will gain exposure to the fundamentals of global health technology and basic skills in Python and Figma, preparing you for our Spring case teams.
You will also meet and have interactive discussions with professors, founders of global health organizations, and professionals from various fields, which is unique to our Fellowship.
After you complete the Fellowship, you will be guaranteed a spot (leadership or associate roles) on our Spring case teams.
